Celtic Claddagh
By Brutus Wiseton
The Claddagh ring is named after its birthplace in Claddagh, Ireland. According to legend, a local man named Richard Joyce was supposed to be married to his true love. Before the wedding could take place, however, the unfortunate Richard was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery. He was brought under the tutelage of a goldsmith and learned to make jewelry and during that time, he secretly created a ring designed with a crowned heart cradled by two hands. Eventually, he managed to escape, smuggling the ring out with him. He reunited with his lady love, gave her the ring, and they were married immediately. Of course they lived happily ever after!
