village in Michoacan that once supported the making of clay toys and whistles underwent a transformation when, in the 1960s, a single artist began to create more elaborate works. Figures such as devils, and scenes that conjured up dreams and visions played with themes of death and monsters that appealed to buyers. Other artists in the community soon began to create elaborate tableaux including Last Suppers, restaurants, weddings, and just about anything the imagination might suggest. For their pure creativity, the ceramic of Ocumicho are widely recognized and sought after
