Handcrafted Haitian Home Decor, Tap Tap Truck with Chickens, Fair Trade 23x23in

Tap taps are brightly painted buses or pick-up trucks that serve as share taxis in Haiti. Literally meaning "quick quick" these vehicles for hire are privately owned and ornately decorated. They follow fixed routes, won't leave until filled with passengers, and riders can disembark at any point in the journey.

This metal art form was born in Haiti in the early 1950's by the blacksmith, Georges Liautaud. It was at the encouragement of an American teacher, DeWitt Peters, who in 1944 opened the Le Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince that Georges Liautaud expanded into the creation of decorative metal sculptures.
