Mexican Fiesta Basket

Basket making or basket weaving represents one of the oldest known traditional hand-made crafts in Mexico predating Columbian times. There are various fibers to which baskets can be woven from such as reeds, grasses, cane and palm fibers. Palm fibers are a popular choice for basket making hence the plentiful Palm groves in the Toluca Region in the state of Puebla, Mexico.

Our Mexican Palm Baskets are made by hand in much the same way as in past centuries. The baskets are made by two different groups of Indian families, the Otomi and the Nahuatl. The Nathuatl Indians are the same group which made up the Aztecs in the 1400s through 1600s so they are the descendants of the Aztecs. Both of these Indian groups live in the state of Mexico. The baskets are made near Toluca which is an industrial city east of Mexico City. Each basket takes about two to three hours, and usually two or three per day are made per person.

These baskets have been made for at least for 75 years. They are made from palm leaf and grass. The palm baskets are beautifully crafted, as well as highly functional. These multi-colored baskets will add a festive touch and bring tradition into your Mexican or Southwestern home decor. By adding Mexican baskets to your home decor, you are also bringing a rich piece of cultural history into your life as well! So go ahead, spice it up a bit and see what happens. You will love these colorful, yet very useful baskets!
