This hand-painted children’s chair is an example of traditional Tigua folk art from the Ecuadorian Andes. Created and signed by José Vega Cuyo (b. 1958), the chair features richly detailed scenes of rural mountain life, including harvest activities, musicians, festivals, livestock, and the dramatic Andean landscape crowned by a snow-capped volcano.
Born in Huano Turupata, Ecuador, and raised in Tigua, Chimbacuchu, José Vega Cuyo is part of the renowned Tigua artistic tradition, known for its bold colors, intricate storytelling, and joyful depictions of indigenous culture. Tigua artists historically paint with chicken-feather brushes, a technique that contributes to the distinctive texture and precision seen in the fine details.
