Peruvian Retablos

Retablo artists use simple wood tools and a plaster made with potato starch, to bring colorful, hand-shaped figurines to life. Elaborately painted wooden boxes with hinged doors open to reveal lively scenes arranged on one or more shelves. These dioramas illustrate everyday places and events, or characters and stories of religious significance.
