Product Description
This stunning Guatemalan Mayan corte (wrap skirt) is a vibrant and highly collectible textile from the town of Zunil, known for its bold imagery and rich weaving traditions. Cortes are traditional wrap-around skirts worn by Mayan women and are created by sewing a long woven panel into a tube, then wrapped, pleated, and secured at the waist with a faja (belt).
This exceptional example features brilliantly colored dogs and flower vases arranged in vertical woven bands against a black cotton background. The imagery is joyful and symbolic, and the colors glow in rich jewel tones—greens, pinks, blues, purples, oranges, yellows, and more.
The embroidered roses that run the full length of the textile are machine-embroidered free-hand, a skilled artisan technique that creates a painterly, expressive effect and is considered an art form in itself.
This corte is fairly thick and heavy, weighing approximately 2.5 pounds, making it suitable not only as traditional clothing but also for textile art display, upholstery, table covering, or wall hanging.
