Product Description
This vintage huipil from Chichicastenango, Guatemala is a beautifully woven example of traditional Mayan textile artistry. Handwoven on a backstrap loom, the huipil features a striking combination of geometric diamond motifs and stylized floral designs, rendered in rich jewel tones against a deep, dark ground.
The neckline is finished with elaborate embroidery, forming a radiating decorative collar that frames the neck opening. A metal snap closure has been added, reflecting traditional adaptation for ease of wear while preserving the integrity of the original textile.
Chichicastenango huipiles are known for their dense patterning and expressive use of color, often communicating cultural identity, community affiliation, and the weaver’s skill. The complexity of the design suggests many weeks or months of careful handwork.
This piece works beautifully as a wearable garment, framed textile, or decorative accent when styled over furniture, as shown.
