Product Description
This vintage women’s huipil from Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala is a beautiful example of traditional Mayan textile artistry. Handwoven on a backstrap loom, the periwinkle base cloth features two-tone vertical purple stripes, a hallmark of Santiago Atitlán weaving.
The neckline is richly hand embroidered with birds and floral motifs, symbolizing nature, life, and community—design elements strongly associated with Atitlán huipiles. The embroidery is finely executed and remains vibrant.
The huipil has open side seams, typical of traditional construction, which may be worn as-is or easily sewn closed if desired. Two bottom panels retain their original selvage edges, while the remaining panels are neatly hemmed.
Condition:
Moderately good vintage condition. Shows expected wear from age and use, including a few loose threads, some light spotting, and minor greying. These do not detract from the overall beauty or structural integrity of the textile.
