Product Description
A striking signed Brazilian woodcut print by Ivan Borges, dated 2006, titled “Os Retirantes Nordestino.” The composition depicts a traveling family and figures moving through the landscape beneath a brilliant sun, accompanied by birds, a horse, and the distinctive vegetation of Brazil’s Northeast.
Rendered in bold black and white, the work has the strong graphic quality associated with Brazilian literatura de cordel and Northeastern folk printmaking. Expressive figures, simplified forms, and richly patterned details give the scene a wonderful narrative quality while documenting themes of migration, family, rural life, and the culture of Brazil’s Nordeste.
The printed image measures approximately 19.75" x 11.5" and appears on a larger sheet of paper, leaving a generous white margin around the artwork. The artist’s name, IVAN BORGES, is incorporated into the lower portion of the image, with an additional handwritten Ivan Borges 2006 signature/date beneath the print.
An especially interesting piece for collectors of Brazilian folk art, Latin American art, woodcuts, printmaking, and narrative art.
Details: Printed image approximately 19.75" W x 11.5" H; overall paper dimensions are larger and not included in this measurement. Signed and dated 2006. Unframed.
(retirantes is a culturally significant Brazilian term for people who leave their homes—particularly in Brazil’s drought-stricken Northeast—in search of better living conditions elsewhere. It often carries associations with drought, hardship, displacement, migration, and perseverance)
