A striking example of mid-century Mexican folk art pottery from Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán, this handcrafted vessel showcases the region’s rich ceramic tradition and distinctive visual language.
Hand-thrown and hand-painted, the piece features a warm cream-toned clay body decorated with dark brown linear motifs, including stylized fish (pez) swimming among rhythmic wave patterns. One of its most distinctive elements is the sculptural, dimensional human face integrated into the form—giving the vessel a strong figural presence and storytelling quality.
The jar includes a fitted lid with an arched handle and side handles, enhancing both its functionality and sculptural appeal. The surface shows subtle variations and minor firing marks consistent with traditional kiln techniques, adding to its authenticity and character.
Unsigned, as is typical for many pieces from this region and period, examples in this condition are increasingly difficult to find—especially with intact lid and such crisp painted decoration.
