Product Description
This remarkable 23" x 33" Nativity by Haitian metal artist Cajuste Winston is a beautiful example of the skill and imagination found in traditional Haitian metalwork.
Beginning with recycled steel oil drums, Winston cuts and works the metal by hand to create an elaborate interpretation of the Nativity. Mary and the infant Jesus rest beneath the stable, surrounded by animals and visitors, while angels announce the birth from above. The Star of Bethlehem shines from the intricately patterned roof.
Look closely and the craftsmanship becomes even more impressive. Tiny hammered patterns cover the roof, clothing, wings and figures. Individual lines and textures are created with simple hand tools, while portions of the sculpture are gently shaped outward to give the scene depth and dimension.
Rather than mass-produced Christmas décor, this is art made by hand in Haiti—a piece with an artist, a story and a tradition behind it.
