This remarkable 10" x 34" Haitian metal sculpture represents Agwe, or Mèt Agwe, an important lwa in Haitian Vodou associated with the sea, ships, sailors and fishermen. He is regarded as a master of the ocean and is sometimes described as the “Neptune of Vodou.”
That connection to the sea comes alive in this unusual sculpture. The figure holds a three-pronged trident, while long, curving forms flow through the composition almost like waves or sea creatures. An elaborate headdress, wing-like forms and beautifully patterned sections give the figure an almost mythical sense of movement.
The entire sculpture was created from recycled steel oil drums using traditional Haitian metalworking techniques. The artist cut, hammered, punched and chiseled the metal by hand, creating an extraordinary amount of texture within a piece only ten inches wide.
While Agwe's traditional vèvè is generally represented by his ship, Haitian artists interpret Vodou imagery in many different ways. For that reason, we describe this as an artist's sculptural representation of Agwe rather than an Agwe vèvè.
