Start your flock with this set of five small flying birds, handcrafted in Haiti from recycled 55-gallon steel oil drums. Each bird measures about 4 x 5 inches — a compact size that's easy to arrange and affordably priced, making this one of our most popular sets for first-time buyers and longtime collectors alike.
The birds are handcrafted by master artisan Cineus Louime and the craftsmen of his workshop. Cineus trained and worked for years in Croix-des-Bouquets, the historic center of Haitian metal drum art. Like many artisans from the area, he and his workshop have recently relocated due to the security situation in the region. We share his work with pride while protecting his and his team's safety, so his current location remains private. What hasn't changed is the craft: each piece is still made the traditional way, by hand, from reclaimed steel.
Each bird has a small hole in the wing for hanging. We prefer this to a riveted hanger because it lets you "pin" a bird to the wall using just the head of a nail — and that gives you full control over the angle. Position a bird with its head up and it's climbing into flight; angle it downward and it's swooping or diving. Mix the directions across your set and the whole flock comes alive with movement across the wall.
Display them indoors on an accent wall, or outside on a fence, shed, or garden post. They look striking grouped together in a tight formation, but they're just as happy scattered among other Haitian metal pieces to create movement and tell a story across your wall.
