Measuring approximately 23" x 35", this large wall sculpture is handcrafted in Haiti from the side of a recycled 55-gallon steel oil drum. Haitian metal artists transform discarded steel drums into remarkable works of art using simple hand tools, carefully cutting, hammering and embossing the metal to create texture and intricate detail.
The mermaid is especially striking, with long flowing hair that becomes part of the swirling ocean design. Her textured tail curves through the sculpture around a sea turtle, while tropical fish complete the underwater scene. The openwork design allows the wall behind it to show through, creating even more dimension when displayed.
Look closely and you can see the individual hammer and chisel marks throughout the mermaid's scales, hair, turtle shell, fish and decorative scrollwork.
