Product Description
This is truly a special piece. This large, one-of-a-kind Madonna and Child was handmade in Peru by acclaimed ceramic artist Richard Chavez and stands an impressive 26 inches tall.
The detail is incredible. The Madonna sits with the Christ Child on her lap, surrounded by lambs, with a beautifully decorated traditional Peruvian vessel at her feet. I especially love the expressions between mother and child and all of the small details Richard has incorporated into their clothing. Even at this large scale, the piece has a very gentle, intimate feeling.
Richard learned the secrets of traditional ceramic making from his older brother in Ayacucho, Peru. When he was fifteen, his family moved to Lima, where he continued to develop and perfect his craft. Since 1995, his work has been exhibited and recognized in folk art competitions both in Peru and internationally. In 2008, Richard received first prize in a competition organized by the Vatican.
One of the things that makes his work so unusual is the coloring. All of the beautiful hues are created using natural dyes. The soft terracotta reds, warm creams, browns and muted earth tones aren't simply painted on with conventional colors—they come from the traditional materials and techniques Richard uses in creating his ceramics. It gives the sculpture a warmth and depth that is even more beautiful in person.
Richard is particularly known for his original Nativities and devotional pieces, often blending Catholic imagery with the people, clothing, animals and traditions of Peru. This Madonna and Child is a wonderful example of that combination.
At 26" tall × 20" wide × 12" deep, this is a substantial sculpture and an incredible statement piece. Because of its size, craftsmanship and detail, I would consider it museum-quality Peruvian folk art and a wonderful piece for a serious collector of Latin American art, religious folk art or traditional ceramics.
