Product Description
A wonderful signed Brazilian folk art woodcut print by Ivan Borges, dated 2006 and titled “O Presépio,” Portuguese for “The Nativity Scene” or “The Manger.”
This bold black-and-white composition presents the traditional Nativity through the distinctive visual language of Northeastern Brazilian folk art. The infant Jesus rests in a manger beneath a radiant star or sun, while Mary and Joseph appear in prayer nearby. A rooster and other rustic elements give the biblical scene a distinctly regional, folkloric character.
The strong contrasts, simplified figures, expressive linework, and graphic patterning are characteristic of the Brazilian xilogravura (woodcut) tradition, closely associated with the popular literatura de cordel culture of Northeastern Brazil.
The artwork is hand signed “Ivan Borges 2006” in pencil beneath the printed image, while IVAN BORGES and O PRESEPIO also appear within the composition.
