Product Description
A striking signed Brazilian folk art woodcut print by J. Borges, one of the best-known artists associated with the traditional woodcut art of Northeastern Brazil.
Titled “Santo Antônio Casamenteiro,” the work depicts Saint Anthony, traditionally revered in Brazil as a saint associated with love, courtship, and marriage. The Portuguese title can be understood as “Saint Anthony the Matchmaker.”
In this bold black-and-white composition, Saint Anthony dominates the center holding the Christ Child, surrounded by two kneeling figures in prayer. A crescent moon and field of stars fill the background, giving the scene a wonderful devotional and folkloric quality. Borges' distinctive simplified figures, strong outlines, and graphic patterning make the image immediately compelling.
The print is hand signed by J. Borges and dated ’06 (2006) beneath the printed image. His name also appears within the woodcut design.
