Product Description
This exceptional Tabla de Sarhua is an authentic hand-painted narrative panel from the Andean village of Sarhua in Peru's Ayacucho region. Measuring an impressive 39.5 inches tall by 5 inches wide, this traditional artwork was created to commemorate the completion of a new family home.
For generations, Sarhua artists have painted these long wooden panels as ceremonial gifts from a compadre (godparent or close family friend) to the family building a new house. The paintings are traditionally read from bottom to top, beginning with a sacred figure and progressing through scenes that celebrate family members, occupations, daily life, and community relationships.
This beautifully detailed example depicts:
- The Virgin and Child, symbolizing spiritual protection
- Agricultural work and potato harvesting
- Family gatherings and community life
- Traditional Andean dress and customs
- Named family members and relatives
- Mountain landscapes representing the Peruvian Andes
The dedication at the bottom reads:
"With all my affection, I dedicate this to my dear friend (compadre), Don Toribio Baldeon, on the construction of his house, September 20, 1994."
Created by Artes de Sarhua, Peru, this piece serves as both a work of art and a visual family history documenting a significant life event within the Andean community.
