Large One-of-a-Kind Tabla de Sarhua Narrative Painting – Peru, Dated August 1994
This extraordinary one-of-a-kind Tabla de Sarhua is a museum-worthy example of Peru's celebrated narrative folk art tradition. Hand-painted in the village of Sarhua, located in the Ayacucho region of the Peruvian Andes, this impressive panel measures 47.25" x 6" and was created in August 1994 as a commemorative gift honoring the construction of a new home.
Traditionally, Sarhua boards were presented by a godparent, relative, or close friend to a family upon the completion of their house. More than decorative objects, these paintings served as visual family histories, documenting relationships, occupations, religious devotion, and community life. Each board is read from bottom to top, revealing the story of the family through a sequence of carefully painted scenes.
At the base of this panel appears a sacred image of the Virgin and Child, reflecting the deep spiritual traditions of the Andes. Above, the narrative unfolds through vivid depictions of family members engaged in daily life and agricultural activities. The scenes portray weaving, farming, animal husbandry, and communal gatherings, each figure identified by name, creating a lasting record of the family's place within the community. The upper sections feature traditional Andean villagers in colorful dress, framed by floral motifs and crowned by a dramatic mountain landscape beneath a radiant sun and crescent moon.
The inscription at the bottom translates:
"With all my affection, I dedicate this to my dear friend Don Dario Contreras for the construction of his house, August 1994."
This dedication confirms the painting's original ceremonial purpose and provides a rare documented date and recipient, enhancing its historical and collectible significance.
Rich in symbolism, cultural heritage, and personal history, this large Sarhua panel is both a striking decorative artwork and an important example of indigenous Peruvian storytelling. Its vibrant colors, detailed figures, and authentic inscription make it an exceptional acquisition for collectors of Latin American folk art, ethnographic art, and one-of-a-kind cultural treasures.
