Ayacucho Ceramics

Since the late 16th century, Ayacucho, Peru has be a center for specialty ceramic art. Fortunate to have an abundant source of local clay, artists first focused on nativity scenes for use in the Church.  With the interest in using a range of figures in these creche scenes, it was a natural progression for the artists to begin developing figures from their everyday experiences in the colonial cities and rural countrysides.
